IJJO in the world

APCJJ Subcommittee for ASEAN

The Subcommittee for South East Asian Nations is a section of the IJJO’s Asia-Pacific Council for Juvenile Justice that gathers representatives from different sectors, within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, whose work is related to juvenile justice systems and children’s rights.

The Subcommittee is comprised of a network of experts working together to strengthen cooperation on juvenile justice systems in the same direction, and in compliance with international standards, for the best interest of the children in the South East Asian region.

Their aim is to learn and exchange experiences in relation to children and youth in justice systems in the 10 countries which form the ASEAN (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Burma and Cambodia), that will contribute to the establishment of appropriate regional working standards, policies and practical guidelines.

The APCJJ Subcommittee for South East Asian Nations had it first meeting in September 2014 in Bangkok, organized by the IJJO and the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection (DJOP) of the Thai Ministry of Justice). The meeting created a good opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, share proper practices, and propose improvements for the treatment of children in conflict with the law in their respective countries.
