Making Families Pay: The Harmful, Unlawful, and Costly Practice of Charging Juvenile Administrative Fees In California


Resumen

Based on three years of research—including a survey of California’s Chief Probation Officers, Public Records Act requests, and interviews with families of youth in the juvenile system and local officials across the state—this report presents research findings about juvenile administrative fees in California. It provides a brief overview of juvenile administrative fees, including the legislative history, current state law, and county practices. It presents findings about how juvenile administrative fees are harmful to families, unlawfully assessed, and costly to society. It describes local efforts to end juvenile administrative fees in California and conclude with recommendations.
