Course 'Managing Challenging Family Law Cases: A Practical Approach'

For any judge who hears family law cases involving high conflict families, child custody and visitation, or property valuation and distribution associated with marriage dissolution, this course provides practice-based tools to assist in the management of the most complex issues. This course's faculty is comprised of a forensic psychologist, communications consultant and judges who teach extensively in the area of family law.

 This course qualifies for 2 credits toward the Master of Judicial Studies Degree Program and Judicial Studies Doctoral Program at the University of Nevada, Reno upon successful completion of the course and passing the course exam. In addition, this course qualifies for The National Judicial College Certificate in Judicial Development program Dispute Resolution Skills, General Jurisdiction Trial Skills, Special Court Jurisdiction Skills, and Tribal Judicial Skills disciplines.

This course is eligible for Continuing Legal and Judicial Education (CLE/CJE) credits under most state boards/bars/commissions.

Please check with the state which you intend to file with regarding filing requirements for CLE/CJE consideration.

CLE/CJE credit hour estimates* are 23 hours total credits with 1 hour of credits devoted to ethics.


After attending this course, participants will be able to:

Apply the latest social science research to craft developmentally appropriate parenting plans;

Utilize problem-solving court principles to provide litigation alternatives to families in crisis;

Effectively manage high-conflict cases;

Ensure safety in cases where domestic violence is indicated; and

Confidently evaluate business financial records and assess business valuations.



Daily schedule Monday through Thursday (unless otherwise noted) is:

7:30-8 a.m. (continental breakfast available)

8 a.m.-4:50 p.m. (class end times Monday-Wednesday may conclude earlier based upon curriculum)

Course concludes with graduation on Thursday from 3:50-4:10 p.m.

Lunch will be served daily from noon-1 p.m.

Refreshment breaks are scheduled throughout the day.
