Could youth mentoring be the key to keeping young people out of jail?

Youth mentors are helping to give young people a brighter future but a lack of funding can get in the way.

Amanda Betts, who mentors young people going through the youth justice system and are feeling "hopeless and powerless", said it's time youth mentoring was looked at more seriously.

"Mentors are a crucial part of a wrap-around approach for young people – you have Oranga Tamariki, police, lawyers, social workers and psychologists but as a mentor you can develop a different sort of relationship with the young person and act as a go-between to get them help.
