Miami-Dade County, Florida and Reform of the Juvenile Justice System

Wansley Walters
IJJO. II International Conference on Juvenile Justice. Brussels 2006.

Abstract

Communication submitted in the II International Conference on Juvenile Justice "Juvenile Justice in Europe: A framework for the integration". Brussels 2006.

Miami-Dade County, Florida is moving into a new era in the field of juvenile justice. With the creation of the Juvenile Services Department (JSD), the nationally recognized work in assessment and casework developed in Miami at the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) for arrested juveniles can now be used for children without the arrest. The potential savings to the community are great both in terms of monetary savings and the ability to implement a true systemic prevention model. Those savings, of course, prove to be secondary to the positive impact on troubled children and their families.
