School-based policing faces fierce opposition as NT Government prepares to revive program

The Northern Territory Government's new school-based policing program has come under fire, with some youth advocates labelling it "alarming", "ill thought out" and at risk of criminalising children.

The program will introduce police officers into 10 schools when term four returns on Monday, with the aim of targeting children at risk of disengaging from the education system.

The school-based constables model was initially introduced in the 1980s, but was changed under the former Country Liberal Party government, which reduced the physical presence of officers at schools.
