IJJO Day by Day

The second day’s afternoon session started with a presentation on the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty by Ms. Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children (SRSG-VAC).

This was followed by a roundtable discussion on the issue of ‘Bringing together regional and international expertise’, moderated and with remarks by Dr. Ton Liefaard. The discussion panel included Ms. Grace C. Agcaoili, Regional advisor and Child Protection Specialist at the UNICEF Regional Office, Ms. Anna Giudice Saget, Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer at UNODC, Mr. Laurent Meillan, Officer in Charge at the United Nations Human Rights Office for South East Asia (OHCHR) and Mr. Wanchai Rujanawong, Representative for Thailand at the ASEAN Commission on the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC).

Working groups on the UN Global Study followed this session, moderated by the SRSG-VAC team. These working groups were aimed at reflecting on ways in which the APCJJ Subcommittee for ASEAN could contribute to the UN Global Study through advocacy, research and regional or thematic consultations, among other possibilities.

In addition, this working group aimed to identify key gaps on children's deprivation of liberty in law, policy, and practice, taking into consideration gender and child-sensitive approaches, data and Restorative Justice, among others. Lastly, this working group considered the kind of methodologies that could be used to ensure an inclusive and participatory global process, including paying special attention to child participation.

The second day of the meeting ended with the conclusions presented by Ms. Marta Santos Pais.
