The European Social Network tackles the rehabilitation and inclusion of young offenders

Tuesday 9th of August 2016
IJJO Day by Day

The IJJO took part in the workshop “Young offenders in Europe: Active inclusion and rehabilitation”, organised by the European Social Network (ESN) on the 11th and 12th of July in Athens, Greece. The workshop gathered more than 30 social services professionals from different levels of government, as well as academics from across Europe.

Issues discussed included the cooperation between social services in the inclusion and rehabilitation of young offenders, the prevention and diversion practices at the local level, and the mental health and wellbeing of young people in conflict with the law.

The IJJO, represented by Ms Adélaïde Vanhove, Policy Officer on European Affairs, was invited to participate in this event as an external expert. During the introductory session, Ms Vanhove made a comparative presentation of the juvenile justice systems of Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania.

Ms Vanhove highlighted the diversity of the legal frameworks, the role of social services in the inclusion and rehabilitation of young offenders in these countries, the use of alternatives to detention, and restorative juvenile justice practices.

Ms Eftychia Katsigaraki, Director of the Division of Strategic Planning, Organising and Functioning of the Ministry of Justice of Greece, and member of the European Council for Juvenile Justice, also took part to the event.

This event was held in the context of ESN’s work on vulnerable youth that has been developed in the recent years through a series of European events in which youth issues were recognized as crucial topics.

The European Social Network (ESN) is a network of over 120 member organisations in 35 countries which comprise national associations of directors, departments of social welfare of government, regions, counties and municipalities, funding and regulatory agencies, universities and other research and development organisations.
