Thursday 25th of August 2016
IJJO Day by Day

From the 16th to the 18th of August 2016, the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) held a 'Regional Workshop on Diversion and Other Alternative Measures for Children in Conflict with the Law' in Bangkok (Thailand).

This workshop consisted of presentations and debates regarding standards, research findings and promising practices in the EAP-region, as well as regional cooperation. The workshop was organised in the context of the publication of a Regional Study on Diversion and Other Alternative Measures for Children in Conflict with the Law in East Asian and Pacific Island Countries developed by UNICEF EAPRO consultant Ms. Ingrid van Welzenis.

The IJJO was invited to give a presentation via Skype on European practices of alternatives to detention for young offenders. Represented by Ms. Sophie Duroy, the IJJO presented its publication ‘Alternatives to Detention for Juvenile Offenders: Manual of good practices in Europe’ as well as its European Research on Restorative Juvenile Justice, and the findings, practices and models of alternatives to detention transferable to other regions.

APCJJ member Judge John Walker also gave a presentation on Community-based responses to violent and sexual offences.
