IJJO Day by Day

The inaugural day of the International Workshop on Diversion through Restorative Justice, held on the 26th of June in Bangkok (Thailand), introduced as well the National Symposium on Ending Violence against Children in Juvenile Justice System, and the Third Meeting of the APCJJ Subcommittee for ASEAN. During this first day of the workshop, participants studied in depth the concept of restorative justice used as a diversionary measure. It started from the basic concepts, through which participants scrutinised the different practices part of the implementation process.

Cédric Foussard, IJJO director of International Affairs, participated in a two-day workshop which launched the Neuchâtel Memorandum Initiative in Syracuse (Italy), on the 19th and 20th of April. The Neuchâtel Memorandum on Good Practices for Juvenile Justice in a Counterterrorism Context was developed by the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) Criminal Justice and Rule of Law Working Group, under the leadership of the Government of Switzerland and the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ).

North American Council for Juvenile Justice (NACJJ) member Elizabeth Clarke carried out a study visit in Belgium and The Netherlands in April to discuss European programmes and meet with representatives from the European Council of Juvenile Justice (ECJJ). Ms. Clarke is the founder and president of Juvenile Justice Initiative, a non-profit policy and advocacy organisation based in Chicago.

IJJO Day by Day

On May 3rd, the IJJO took part in the conference ‘Overcoming youth marginalisation - Best practices to prevent radicalisation and criminalisation of youth in state of vulnerability’ at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) premises in Brussels.The conference was organised by the Human Rights Youth Organisation (HRYO) in partnership with the EESC and the European Parliament's Intergroup on the Rights of the Child.

The ‘Alternative Ways to Address Youth (AWAY)’ project held its kickoff meeting on the 4th and 5th of April 2017 in Budapest. This project focuses on diversion measures for children in conflict with the law, and is coordinated by Terres des Hommes Hungary. The IJJO is a partner of the project.

On April 24th and 25th, the IJJO and the Belgian Federal Public Service of Justice co-organised a seminar regarding the Belgian juvenile justice approach to Counter Terrorism. This seminar focused on the methods Belgian organisations and municipality representatives use to identify radicalised youth, and their approach to prevent and counter this issue.

IJJO Day by Day

The second steering group meeting of the EU project ‘FACT FOR MINORS – Fostering alternative care for troubled minors’ took place on the 18th and 19th of May in Barcelona. The main objective of this project is to reinforce the capacity of, and the cooperation between, professionals working in alternative care communities in five European Union (EU) countries -Finland, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain- to adequately support and respond to the specific needs of children with psychiatric disorders under penal measures.
