OIJJ Día a Día

The European Solidarity Corps is the new European Union initiative which creates opportunities for young people to work in projects in their own country, or abroad, that benefit communities around Europe. Members of the IJJO attended its Stakeholder Forum on April 12th in Brussels.

This past May 3rd, the final conference of the European project ‘MIPREDET - Analysis of procedures and conditions on minors’ pre-trial detention’ took place in Murcia (Spain). During the event, this project’s partners presented their results to the participants of the conference.

IJJO Day by Day

On this past May 2, the 4th steering group meeting of the European project ‘MIPREDET: Analysis of procedures and conditions on minors’ pre-trial detention’, financed by the Justice Programme of the European Commission, took place in the city of Murcia (Spain), hosted by the project coordinating partner, Fundación Diagrama. The other project partners are Asociation Diagrama (France), Istituto Don Calabria (Italy), Universidade Católica Portuguesa do Porto (Portugal) and the International Juvenile Justice Observatory (Belgium).

IJJO Day by Day

On April 28th, the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) hosted an event regarding the improvement of child participation in judicial proceedings, to which participated both experts in the field of juvenile justice, and children giving their testimonies. This event followed the publication, last February, of a report which included extensive interviews with both professionals and children, outlining children’s views on factors impeding their full participation and on efforts which can help overcome such barriers within EU juvenile justice systems.

IJJO Day by Day

The IJJO and the Foundation 180 gathered from the 27th to the 29th of March in The Hague for the second study visit of the project ‘PRALT - The prevention of juvenile radicalisation: Promoting the use of alternatives to detention through judicial training’. The study-visit and training session in the Netherlands regarded deradicalisation processes through alternatives to detention, including community and family based approaches to disengagement.

IJJO Day by Day

The recent publication 'Protecting Children against Torture in Detention: Global Solutions for a Global Problem' consists of a compilation of more than 30 articles written by different experts and practitioners, aiming to expand upon the 2015 United Nations report on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. This publication includes an article by the IJJO chairman, Dr. Francisco Legaz Cervantes, on best practices regarding children in juvenile detention facilities, entitled ‘Model of Psychosocial Intervention for Children Deprived of Liberty in a Juvenile Justice Framework: Efficiency through International Standards’ (page 217).

IJJO Day by Day

‘Extremely Together’, an initiative under the Kofi Annan Foundation, the European Commission, One Young World organization and Amersi Foundation,  held a conference in Brussels on the 28th of March called ‘Youth Perspectives on Countering Violent Extremism’. The main objective for this event was to present the world’s first counter-extremism guide for young people made by young people. This guide was designed to promote the mobilisation of young people against violent extremism.

IJJO Day by Day

The first steering committee meeting for the project ‘Implementing Restorative Justice with Child Victims’ was held in Brussels on the 20th of March, at the IJJO headquarters. The project, funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union, is being organised to increase and adapt the research on restorative justice within the EU, and ensure mutual learning between six countries.

On the 7th and 8th of March, the IJJO participated in an expert group meeting on tertiary education as a part of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's (UNODC) Education for Justice (E4J) initiative. The meeting was held in the UN's offices in Vienna.

IJJO Day by Day

On the 23rd of February, the IJJO took part in an expert seminar on the implementation of the Victims’ Directive (2012/29/EU), which establishes minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime. The seminar, hosted in Brussels, was organised by the Criminal Justice Platform Europe (CJPE). The focus of this seminar was on articles 25 and 26, respectively on the training of practitioners and the cooperation between services, in order to provide better assistance to victims of crime across Europe.
