IJJO Day by Day

The IJJO and the Foundation 180 gathered from the 27th to the 29th of March in The Hague for the second study visit of the project ‘PRALT - The prevention of juvenile radicalisation: Promoting the use of alternatives to detention through judicial training’. The study-visit and training session in the Netherlands regarded deradicalisation processes through alternatives to detention, including community and family based approaches to disengagement.

IJJO Day by Day

The recent publication 'Protecting Children against Torture in Detention: Global Solutions for a Global Problem' consists of a compilation of more than 30 articles written by different experts and practitioners, aiming to expand upon the 2015 United Nations report on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. This publication includes an article by the IJJO chairman, Dr. Francisco Legaz Cervantes, on best practices regarding children in juvenile detention facilities, entitled ‘Model of Psychosocial Intervention for Children Deprived of Liberty in a Juvenile Justice Framework: Efficiency through International Standards’ (page 217).

IJJO Day by Day

‘Extremely Together’, an initiative under the Kofi Annan Foundation, the European Commission, One Young World organization and Amersi Foundation,  held a conference in Brussels on the 28th of March called ‘Youth Perspectives on Countering Violent Extremism’. The main objective for this event was to present the world’s first counter-extremism guide for young people made by young people. This guide was designed to promote the mobilisation of young people against violent extremism.

IJJO Day by Day

The first steering committee meeting for the project ‘Implementing Restorative Justice with Child Victims’ was held in Brussels on the 20th of March, at the IJJO headquarters. The project, funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union, is being organised to increase and adapt the research on restorative justice within the EU, and ensure mutual learning between six countries.

On the 7th and 8th of March, the IJJO participated in an expert group meeting on tertiary education as a part of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's (UNODC) Education for Justice (E4J) initiative. The meeting was held in the UN's offices in Vienna.

IJJO Day by Day

On the 23rd of February, the IJJO took part in an expert seminar on the implementation of the Victims’ Directive (2012/29/EU), which establishes minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime. The seminar, hosted in Brussels, was organised by the Criminal Justice Platform Europe (CJPE). The focus of this seminar was on articles 25 and 26, respectively on the training of practitioners and the cooperation between services, in order to provide better assistance to victims of crime across Europe.

A 'Dialogue on Countering Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Radicalization to Violence in Central Asia' was hosted by the Global Counterterrorism Forum's Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF) Working Group on February 23rd in The Hague (The Netherlands). This dialogue meeting was an opportunity to exchange on the challenges faced by Central Asian States regarding foreign terrorist fighters, the existing and developing programmes and tools to address this phenomenon, and the international cooperation mechanisms on this issue. Particular attention was given to tools for implementing the Hague-Marrakech Memorandum in Central Asia.

Sophie Duroy, analyst and project manager at the IJJO, participated on February 15th and 16th in a workshop on mainstreaming the prevention of violent extremism in the ARF region, which took place in Brussels, jointly organised by the Philippines, Australia and the European Union.

Within the final phase of the EU financed project ‘Strengthening Human Rights within Correctional Facilities in Kenya’, the International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO) and the European Committee for Training and Agriculture (CEFA) hosted a roundtable meeting to review the outcome of the project, which included the IJJO’s published report ‘Human Rights and Deprivation of Liberty in Kenya:  An Analysis of the Human Rights’ Situation and Guidelines for an Internal Monitoring System’. The meeting took place on the 17th of January at the IJJO’s head office in Brussels.

The Fifth Meeting of the European Council for Juvenile Justice (ECJJ) served as a forum for juvenile justice professionals and actors in the field to tackle some of the most pressing issues regarding the protection of the rights of children and young people in contact with the law in Europe, while further developing and planning current and future projects of the Council. It was held in Valencia, Spain, from Wednesday the 15th to Friday the 17th of February 2017, organised by the International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO), with the support of IberCaja Obra Social and Bankia.
