Youth, families and communities across Michigan could benefit if the state changes the age for juvenile court jurisdiction from 17 to 18, finds new research from Michigan State University’s Julian Samora Research Institute.
Michigan is one of four states – along with Georgia, Texas and Wisconsin – that still allows 17-year-olds to be charged as adults.

In the United States, youth are routinely sent to detention centers and then incarcerated due to status offenses such as truancy, running away or “being beyond parental control.” While most of the incarcerated youth spend time behind bars because of the harm they caused to person or property, status offenders are only penalized because of the age at which they commit these otherwise mundane “offenses.”

In fact, if they were just a few years older, there would be no legal consequences at all.

For more than half an hour, the boy in the cell tried to strangle himself. For a period of time he appeared to be unconscious.

He was under observation by staff but they did not intervene or enter the room. And it was not reported as a self-harm or suicide attempt, as it should have been.

This distressing incident was one of at least seven occasions in the past year where young people in a Victorian youth justice facility tried to self-harm while under observation and staff failed to act.

La Directora General del Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF), Juliana Pungiluppi, presentó el informe sobre violencia sexual de niños, niñas y adolescentes al Congreso, el documento comprende la implementación de la Ley 1146 de 2007, en el que se explicó que el Ministerio de Salud expedirá un decreto para adoptar un mecanismo articulador que aglomere instancias de coordinación a nivel nacional y territorial, y establezca metas conjuntas.

After a 16-year-old student was allegedly raped by four fellow students in a boarding school in Dehradun, school officials tried to force her to have an abortion when they found out she was pregnant.

The alleged crime was perpetrated by four students on August 14, but came to light on September 16 after Dehradun's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nivedita Kureti was tipped off, Hindustan Times reported today.
