Overview

The online course 'Fostering Alternative Care for Troubled Minors' aims at training legal and alternative care professionals, social and youth workers, health staff, psychologists and other actors involved or interested in the juvenile justice and alternative care fields in EU Member States to strengthen their response to the particular needs of children in conflict with the law with psychiatric or psychological issues, problems or disorders.

The course also aims to strengthen interagency and multidisciplinary cooperation in alternative care systems to improve their capacity to respond to children’s needs, as well as raise awareness on the rights of the child, particularly regarding children in alternative care.

It will be hosted in English.

The online course will be hosted on the website of the IJJO's International School for Juvenile Justice, and has been developed within the framework of the project 'Fact for Minors – Fostering Alternative care for Troubled Minors', co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) Programme of the European Union.

 

Contents: 4 modules

Module 1 “Theoretical underpinning and standards related to young people and mental health” provides the main concepts, as well as the legal and policy instruments, needed to understand the theoretical and practical interaction between the justice system and health system.

Module 2 “Multi-agency working in alternative care” sets out the roles and responsibilities of the different professional and services that children with mental health problems interact with along the way in the context of juvenile justice and alternative care.

Module 3 “European practices of youth justice in alternative care” focuses on juvenile justice and alternative care practices and on the challenges of the multi-agency work in European countries.

Module 4 “Fact for Minors – case study and outcomes” is based on the national reports of the partner´s countries of the project “Fact for Minors” to provide the reader with concrete examples and two case-studies on the challenges to involve the juvenile justice and the health systems and improve their cooperation to implement alternative care for children with mental health problems.

Aimed at developing skills to

• Deepen and enhance knowledge to strengthen the cooperation between the juvenile justice and the health systems of EU countries and to implement the multi-agency approach regarding alternative care for children with mental health problems.

• Deepen and enhance knowledge of related international and European standards.

• Apply international juvenile justice standards related to the topic to particular cases.

Self-enrolment is now open. In order to enrol, please follow these steps:

Register as a new user on the ISJJ platform via this link.

Once you are a registered user, enrol on the 'Fostering Alternative Care for Troubled Minors' course via this link.

The course will accept 40 students in its first edition, corresponding to the first 40 enrolments.
