Juvenile Arrests 2006

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention

Resumen

In 2006, law enforcement agencies in the United States made an estimated 2.2 million
arrests of persons under age 18. Juveniles accounted for 17% of all violent crime arrests and 26% of all property crime arrests in 2006. The substantial growth in juvenile violent crime arrests that began in the late 1980s and peaked in 1994 was followed by 10 consecutive years of decline. Between 1994 and 2004, the juvenile arrest rate for Violent Crime Index offenses fell 49%, reaching its lowest level since at least 1980. However, this long-term downward trend was broken in 2005 with a 2% annual increase in Violent Crime Index arrests followed by a 4% increase in 2006. More specifically, 2005 and 2006 saw increases in juvenile arrests for murder and robbery but continued declines in arrests for forcible rape and aggravated assault.
