“10” is a new documentary produced by the African Child Policy Forum in collaboration with Defence for Children International (DCI) and International Child Support (ICS). It presents a searing indictment of penal systems prevalent across much of the African continent, which see thousands of children and adolescents imprisoned in some of the harshest conditions in the world today.
Focusing on prison systems in four countries – Kenya, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zanzibar –“10” reveals the harsh realities facing child prisoners today, who are incarcerated in overcrowded, poor conditions, often without the benefit of trial or proper legal representation; required to share living space with hardened adult criminals; denied access to proper nutrition, blankets and healthcare; and daily subjected to physical, psychological and sexual abuse – all of which contravene humanitarian rights instruments and international conventions.
