Wednesday (September 12) Speaker:

Self Defense and Restraint Techniques - Kevin Kellems

Kevin Kellems has been a Juvenile Probation Officer for over 18 years in Calhoun County, Michigan. Currently he is on Special Assignment with the Fusion Center at the Battle Creek City Police Department. The Fusion Center consists of members from MDOC Probation/Parole, Homeland Security, BCPD, Community Mental Health & CPS. In 2017 Kevin was selected as the Mary S. Coleman Juvenile Justice Service Award Winner. A Lake Superior State University graduate, Kevin also earned his Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix. One of the areas that he is passionate about is teaching both Criminal Justice and Defensive Tactics. Kevin has been sought out by a number of different law enforcement agencies for his Defensive Tactics Instruction. Since 2013, Kevin has been the owner and Head Instructor at Mushin Jiu Jitsu De Brazil Academy.  With over 27 years experience in the martial arts Kevin has earned a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 1st Degree Black Belt in Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do and has extensive training in several other martial arts including: Aikido, Judo & Sombo.

Teenage Suicide: Signs, trends and interventions - Tim Strauss

Timothy F. Strauss has been practicing as a limited licensed Psychologist for 36 years. He has worked in a variety of formats, including Community Mental Health, Catholic Human Services, a nonprofit agency, as well as being the director of a nonprofit agency. For over two decades, he has been in private practice.

Mr. Strauss received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Theology from Valparaiso University, and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University.

Mr. Strauss has specialized in working with children and adolescents. As such, he has done assessments for numerous courts in Michigan. He has also testified in 20 different courts in Michigan, and is often called upon as an expert witness in the fields of juvenile and adult competency, juvenile placement, abuse and neglect, and violence risk assessment. Mr. Strauss has testified hundreds of times and has completed thousands of psychological assessments. He has been a trainer and speaker, has presented to the Michigan Probate Judges Associations and at DHHS state conferences on teen suicide. Mr. Strauss has trained foster care workers on such topics as attachment, ADHD, Conduct Disorder and behavioral issues.
