About this course:
An in-depth course delivered online across three weeks which will give you the knowledge and confidence to represent your clients in a Children’s Hearing. This training is delivered by experienced lawyers, currently working in this specialist environment.
Clan Childlaw are a Law Society Authorised Trainee CPD provider and as such completion of this training will count as 9 hours of TCPD.
NOTE: To complete this training you will need to attend all three sessions on the 7th, 14th and 21st November 2023. The advertised cost covers all three sessions.
Who is this course for?
Trainee solicitors, or those new to representing clients in Children’s Hearings.
Key learning:
The first session will introduce you to the ethos of the Children’s Hearing system, the rights and duties of everyone involved, how a person can become a Relevant Person or a Participation Individual, and how a child or young person is referred to a Children’s Hearing. We will also cover the requirements to be registered to provide children’s legal assistance, and tips for what makes a good legal aid application.
The second session will focus on the different grounds for referral, how these can be contested by the child and relevant persons and what the court process involves. We will also focus on the different outcomes of Children’s Hearings, including the types of measures that can be included in a Compulsory Supervision Order.
The third and final session will focus on the Children’s Hearings power to provide authorisation for a child to be placed in secure accommodation, and how to appeal the decisions of a children’s hearing.
About the trainer:
Sarah Bannerman qualified as a solicitor in 2018 focusing on child & family law and joined Clan Childlaw in 2019. She works with children and young people every day, representing them in Children’s Hearings, at Court and in important meetings. Sarah uses the law to support children and young people as they seek contact with their brothers and sisters and to obtain participation rights to attend and be heard at their siblings’ Children’s Hearings.
